Overview

The media is an all pervasive influence on modern business and it is important that staff are properly trained to ensure that information is passed on to the press in a timely manner having proper regard to the company's commercial sensitivities.

Inadequately trained staff can damage a company's reputation by both how they release information and also what information they release. Often staff will need to be aware of the best person within an organisation to respond on behalf of the company to the media for any particular situation or query from the media.

In an emergency, staff will need to respond calmly and cohesively regardless of the pressure of the situation and the nature of the emergency.

What MDA does

MDA devises bespoke training programmes for media staff and personnel likely to give media interviews. The training can be delivered as a stand-alone package to test media staff or as part of an integrated exercise in which media staff are exercised alongside security personnel.

Stand-alone training is best suited to check media procedures and can include one-to-one briefings to ensure that all learning points are covered. This type of training can be undertaken as a desk-top exercise including all or part of the media team to minimise any disruption to operations.

Integrated exercises are best suited to test communications and response both internally and externally during a security alert. Participants are tested to check responses under stress and feedback is provided both verbally and in a post exercise report to ensure all learning points are covered.

Subsequent exercises should be undertaken at regular intervals to ensure that staff's awareness of the importance of the media and how to respond remains high.

Training aids

MDA provides exercise scenarios including realistic radio, newspaper and television injects to provide maximum realism during a training exercise. Exercises can be created to meet the specific operational needs - time, venue and personnel involved - of the customer.
